Father to Son Forge Forging Classes

Forging Classes

Father to Son Forge. Knife forging experience!

Welcome to an opportunity to forge you own blade! This experience is in an actual working blacksmith forge, Father to Son Forge. You will have the opportunity to forge your blade from a railroad spike from beginning to completion. You will leave with your blade ready to use!
In this experience you will work with Perry Johnson, owner and senior blacksmith of Father to Son Forge who will guide you and teach the basics of blade making. This is a 3 hour experience that you can create something that you can pass on for generations. As a final part you will be able to stamp your own initials into your work.
The experience will begin at 10 am and typically takes 3 hours for one person. Time may vary depending if more then one person is creating a blade. We encourage families to work together in making a blade.
What to expect:
An introduction and basic instruction in bladesmithing .
Guidance and assistance in hand forging. (Power hammer tool use is only by the Blacksmith, sometimes this is done to stream line the development of the blade, depending on the student’s design)
The final quench is done in oil followed by polishing and sharpening.
What to wear and bring:
Wear jeans, non-synthetic clothes and leather top shoes. No nylon or synthetic clothes please and no open toe shoes. The shop is a working shop so there are inherent conditions for injury. It is common to get burns from sparks in clothes. If you like you can wear a leather apron. No loose hanging clothes that can get caught on something. A hat is fine, however if you wear a ball cap or one with a brim, you may be asked to turn it around during some activities for safety.
Bring eye protection- this is a must
Hearing protection if you want- ear plugs are fine
Leather gloves are recommended
Also, water, snacks if you want.
And bring a camera!!
Safety is paramount so please be aware that no alcohol or other mood mind altering substances are allowed during the experience. If an individual appears under the influence or in any way impaired and presents as being unsafe (this is to the Blacksmith discretion) the Blacksmith reserves the right to cancel or suspend the workshop.
